Carboxymethyl starch is a white pale yellow powder: odorless, insoluble in organic solvents such as ethanol, ether, acetone, etc. It can swell after 15 minutes in cold water. It is unstable in neutral alkaline environments and produces white turbidity and precipitation in the presence of strong acids and metal salts. It can form a clear and transparent solution in cold water. Methyl starch has water absorption, is soluble in water, fully expands, and its volume can reach 200-300 times the original. Its water absorption is better than that of methyl cellulose fiber because it contains acid groups. Due to its integrated ion exchange and heavy metal ion calcium interaction, starch also has certain film-forming properties, water retention, thickening, permeability, and stability.
